MANITOBA ART EXPO
The Manitoba Art Expo was originally the vision of a private individual whose
desire was to establish a venue for serious artists in Manitoba who were not
recognized by the establishment. He was concerned that such artists' work was
not being given the recognition it deserved for considerations that he
considered elitist.
Brief History:

1996 the First Manitoba Art Expo held,
Robert Bateman was the feature artist

1998 moved from the Convention Center to Assiniboia Downs
-
the private venture, starring well-known Canadian artists and
supporting a specific charity, continued until 2000
-
In 2000 participating artists formed a Cooperative and took
over the managing of the show, under the name Assiniboia Group of Artists
Cooperative

Showcase Gallery
became a prime and unique feature concentrating on Manitoba talent, the public
is able to vote for their favorite entry each year.

Since 2000 the cooperative had been partnered with CancerCare
Manitoba Foundation

Framer’s
corner, with artists donating art work and framing galleries donating the
framing is a popular feature. The public purchases draw tickets on the donated
art and the entire proceeds are dedicated to CancerCare

The
Art Expo has donated over $52,000 to CancerCare over a 10 year period.

In 2010 the cooperative has become partnered with Pennies From
Heaven, a project of the Winnipeg Free Press that supports Winnipeg Harvest and
The Christmas Cheer Board
Mission Statement: The
Assiniboia Group of Artist Cooperative Inc. is dedicated to the support,
encouragement and promotion of visual artists in Manitoba and to provide, in a
creative and entertaining way, the opportunity of these artists to display
their works in a public forum.
At the same time, recognizing their responsibility to
support their community, the Cooperative accepts the challenge to raise funds
for worthy, designated charities.
