Roger was born in England in 1953, and soon after,
immigrated with his family to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he has lived and worked
for the last fifty years. As a child he was constantly drawing and painting, which
eventually led to a graphic design course completed in 1971.
His career as an illustrator spanned over a thirty years,
working as a layout artist for various print firms and design studios. When the
print industry made the change to digital graphics, he decided to change direction.
Following a five year period in the automotive sector, he
chose to combine his two loves, the automobile and art, to focus on automotive portraits,
which currently include corporate and private commissions. His main area of interest
includes classic cars, hot rods, motorcycles and all forms of auto racing, and vintage aircraft.
"The automotive subjects demand a great amount of detail and accuracy,
and for this reason I have chosen to work in watercolor. The automotive finishes and colors can
be very difficult to reproduce, but by layering up to eight or more washes I can achieve the
correct color and depth, while retaining the brilliance. Although my technique requires control
of washes and color, I still prefer to allow the loose blends to take their own form and direction."
